What is Barton Springs Pool?
Considered the “Crown Jewel of Austin,” Barton Springs Pool is a local treasure and by far the best way to cool off on a hot Texas day! Just a few miles from the Heywood Hotel, this spring-fed, natural-bottom pool measures three acres in size!
Although it may look like a natural swimming hole, Barton Springs is an actual public pool, complete with lifeguards, changing stations and restrooms.
How cold is Barton Springs Pool?
With year-round temperatures of 68 degrees Fahrenheit, Barton Springs Pool is one of the best places to swim in Austin — especially to escape the heat. The three-acre pool is surrounded by grassy areas where you can lounge with the locals and soak up the sun before taking a dip in the icy spring-fed waters.
Is Barton Springs Pool free?
Barton Springs Pool charges admission during peak swimming season, which is from Spring Break through October 31st. Admission prices vary for residents, non-residents, children, and adults 62 and older.
Is Barton Springs Pool safe to swim in?
Yes! Barton Springs Pool is a natural, spring-fed pool that is safe to swim in. Lifeguards are on site. The City of Austin regularly monitors the water quality of Barton Springs and other natural bodies of water to ensure water quality. You can always check with our concierge team about the latest pool updates before heading out for your swim if you want to be safe.

What do I need to know before going to Barton Springs Pool?
Bring a towel, sunscreen, and plenty of water to stay hydrated. You may also consider bringing a large picnic blanket to spread out on, as the pool is surrounded by large grassy areas sans chairs.
And because the pool is all-natural, there are natural rock formations at the bottom that you may need to walk on. These can be slippery, so wear water shoes if you want to err on the side of caution.
Forgot to pack the essentials? We’ve got you covered. Guests staying at the Heywood have access to free beach towels, soft-sided coolers, sunscreen, and more.
